An interview with Bita Novinrad
Bita Novinrad, P. Eng is an accomplished textile chemist and fiber science engineer, who for the past 8 years has contributed to Maxime Knitting’s success, now operating as BekeartDeslee Canada. The group globally operates 27 manufacturing sites across 19 countries, producing textiles for the mattress industry.
With a background in textile engineering, Novinrad gained hands-on experience in fabric production, quality control, testing and process optimization. Climbing the company ranks while increasing her leadership and technical skills, she is now Head of the Quality Department for the company. Last year was a busy year for Novinrad, not only leading the team to achieve ISO 9001:2015 certification but also earning a P. Eng. designation, a significant career milestone.
Product compliance and quality control are at the center of her day-to-day activities, from both customer and industry points of view. This is achieved by working closely with production, driving continuous improvement initiatives, managing customer claims and performing internal audits. It requires a deep understanding of the technical aspects of textile engineering, while navigating the regulatory and administrative framework of product compliance.

“Advancements in technology, automation and digital systems have changed how we manage production and quality” says Novinrad. The role requires strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
“The most significant change I’ve witnessed is the growing emphasis on sustainability and certifications. There is now a strong demand for environmentally friendly materials, traceability, and certifications.”
“The industry is constantly evolving, especially in sustainability and technology. Awareness of environmental and sustainability standards is becoming increasingly necessary in today’s industry.” Her advice for making it in this business is to acquire both practical experience and scientific foundations, along with the soft skills of leadership, communication, adaptability and critical thinking. A balanced skillset helps bridge the technical and commercial requirements for customers and the organization. “It’s important to be able to be able to connect with people across all levels, from production teams to customers and top management.” Networking also helps to keep up with the fast pace of changes happening in the industry. “Organizations like ITS can also provide valuable insights and connections.”
Recently, perturbations in the US-Canada cross-border trade due to the imposition of tariffs have forced BekeartDeslee to adapt. Optimization of sourcing strategies and alternative supply chains has helped mitigate cost increases. “Our strong global presence and strategic planning have allowed us to continue delivering high-quality products without compromising service levels.”
Novinrad is curious of all things and enjoys exploring and reading about new surroundings and cultures, hiking and travelling.
